Hedgehog Technologies Recognized with Two 2024 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards

Hedgehog Technologies is thrilled to announce we’ve been recognized for a 2024 Canadian Consulting Engineering Award of Excellence and a Building a Better Canada Award for the Haida Gwaii 2 MW solar array, an innovative project built by the Haida Nation and Tll Yahda Energy. This achievement reflects our passion for sustainable energy solutions and showcases the incredible partnership with the Haida people.

Haida Nation built, owned, and operated

Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off the coast of British Columbia, is home to the Haida Nation, an Indigenous community with a rich culture and history deeply connected to the land and sea. Hedgehog partnered with the Haida Nation on a bold, complex project: building a 2 MW solar array and microgrid controller along the Masset airport runway. To facilitate this, the Haida Nation created the Tll Yahda Energy corporation in a ground-breaking partnership between Old Massett Village Council, Skidegate Band Council, and the Council of Haida Nation. Through intensive training, mentorship, and job creation, local community members brought this solar project to life. Despite the technical challenges, the Haida Nation’s determination pushed the project forward, creating jobs, promoting local expertise, and paving the way for energy independence on future initiatives.

Environmental Stewardship

Placing a solar farm on the Masset runway avoids clearcutting Haida Gwaii’s ancient old-growth forests, protecting a unique ecosystem rich with rare species and cultural significance. These forests are important for carbon storage and biodiversity. By using existing airport infrastructure, the project preserves the delicate balance of land and sea life while supporting sustainable energy and reducing diesel dependency—showing that renewable energy can coexist with conservation.
