I recently had the opportunity to spend several days in San Diego for the APTA Safety and Risk Seminar, and it proved to be an inspiring and meaningful experience. Bringing together nearly 300 industry experts from across North America, the event created an environment filled with collaboration, shared learning, and a unified commitment to improving safety across rail and transit operations.
Throughout the seminar, I was encouraged to hear how many agencies are navigating similar challenges and how others are addressing unique operational issues in creative ways. The discussions were a strong reminder that although every system has its own complexities, we all share the same mission. We are collectively focused on strengthening the safety, reliability, and resilience of the services our communities depend on.
Appreciation for San Diego MTS

I want to extend sincere thanks to our hosts at the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS). Their hospitality throughout the event was exceptional, and the facility tours they organized provided valuable insight into their operations.
Visiting the Trolley Operations Control Centre and maintenance facilities was a highlight. I was impressed by the pride their teams take in their fleet and by the overall level of care that is clearly embedded in their culture. The vehicles were some of the cleanest and best maintained I have seen, and it was evident that their staff approaches every detail with professionalism and commitment.
Looking Ahead

Events like this reinforce why collaboration is so important in our industry. Safety is not a one-time achievement. It is an evolving goal that requires continuous learning, open conversation, and a willingness to share experiences. I am grateful for the perspectives gained, the connections strengthened, and the renewed sense of purpose that comes from spending time with colleagues who are dedicated to the same vision.
I look forward to carrying these insights into our work and continuing to engage with peers across the transit community as we collectively advance safety and operational excellence.
