30 by 30 Conference | Awards Gala | AGM
May 21–24, 2025 – Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, Vancouver, BC
Hedgehog Technologies was proud to take part in a pivotal week for Canada’s engineering profession. Held at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, the Engineers Canada series of events included the 30 by 30 Conference: Solutions and Accountability Towards an Inclusive Engineering Profession, the Engineers Canada Awards Gala, and the Annual General Meeting (AGM). These events brought together engineers, leaders, and change-makers from across the country to reflect, collaborate, and drive the profession forward.
Day 1: 30 by 30 Conference – Solutions and Accountability
The week began with the 30 by 30 Conference, focused on increasing the representation of women in engineering to 30% by 2030. The theme this year—Solutions and Accountability—centered on tangible steps to build a more inclusive and equitable profession.
Attendees included past president Nancy Hill, Karina LeBlanc, Siobhan Robinson, and our own team member, who joined sessions that explored inclusive hiring practices, mentorship, and institutional accountability.
Our CEO, Dr. Michael Wrinch, who also serves as the 2024–2025 President of Engineers Canada, delivered a opening comments. He reflected on his leadership journey and emphasized the role organizations must play in ensuring that all engineers, regardless of gender, have the opportunity to thrive.
“It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many passionate professionals working to make engineering a more inclusive field,” said Dr. Wrinch. “Progress requires action, and this conference was a powerful reminder that we’re stronger when we work together.”
A standout moment from the conference was a LEGO-building activity, where participants were challenged to individually create structures, then collaborate to merge their ideas into a unified build. The activity symbolized the process of bringing diverse perspectives together—a practical metaphor for building an inclusive profession.
During the event, a $5,000 donation cheque was presented in support of Ending Violence in BC, underscoring the engineering community’s commitment to broader societal impact beyond technical contributions.
Day 2–4: Board Meetings, Induction Ceremony, and AGM
Following the conference, Engineers Canada hosted Directors Training and the Board Meeting to elect the incoming president. Hedgehog was honoured to witness and participate in these significant governance sessions.
During the induction ceremony, the current president formally inducted President-Elect John Vanderput as the new President of Engineers Canada and welcomed new board members, who took the oath of office. It was a ceremonial yet powerful moment, reinforcing leadership accountability and continuity in the profession.
Awards Gala – Honouring Excellence
The week also featured the Engineers Canada Awards Gala, a celebratory evening recognizing individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to the engineering profession. Hedgehog Technologies proudly joined in recognizing the achievements that are shaping the future of engineering in Canada.
Day 4: Engineers and Geoscientists BC AGM
On the final day, Hedgehog attended the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Engineers Canada. The AGM provided a platform for engaging with regulatory updates, strategic planning, and vision-setting for the future of the profession.
Topics ranged from licensing innovations to evolving professional standards, and the event provided valuable insight into how provincial and national organizations are aligning to support engineering excellence and accountability.
Looking Ahead
We are grateful to have participated in this impactful series of events and return to our work energized by the shared vision of a more inclusive and responsible engineering profession. At Hedgehog Technologies, we remain committed to applying the insights and inspiration gained from the 30 by 30 Conference, Awards Gala, and AGM to our ongoing mission of building a better future through engineering.
